Eligibility requirements

B. You need to be a Parent of a qualifying child

C. The qualifying child needs to live with you

  • Applicants must file their 2023 income and benefit tax return.
  • Candidates need to fulfil the program`s income limit single individuals don’t need to have more than $51,533 of net income whereas married couples don’t need to have a net income of more than $54,647.

Ineligibility for GST credit

  • If you are not a resident of Canada for tax purposes
  • If you are in prison for at least 90 days, you are not eligible for the GST credit
  • If you are an officer or servant of another country, you don’t have to pay taxes. You can`t claim credit for a deceased person

How your GST credit is calculated

The base year is the year of the tax return from which information is taken to calculate the GST credit amount for the payment period. The payment period is the 12-month period during which the GST credits are paid. The payment period runs from July 1 of the year following the base year to June 30 of the next year.

For example, GST credit payments calculated on the 2023 tax return will start being issued in July 2024, which is the beginning of the payment period. The following chart tells us the link between the base year and the payment period.

If the CRA determine that you are eligible for the GST credit based on your 2023 tax return and that you will receive payments, you will receive a GST credit notice in July 2024.

For the payment period from July 2024 to June 2025, the CRA bases your credit on the following:

  • Your marital status
  • The number of eligible children you have registered for the GST
  • Your adjusted family net income for the 2023 base year

When your GST credit is recalculated

The CRA will send you a GST notice of redetermination showing the received annual credit amount when any of the following situations apply:-

  • After a change in your marital status
  •  After a change in the number of eligible children in your care
  • After the death of a GST credit recipient
  • After each reassessment of either your or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s( a person to whom you are not married but with whom you are living relationship) tax return that affects net income
